American Soccer League
1967 - 1968
As fall 1967 approached, the ASL endeavored to persevere: earlier that year, interests in Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit and Minnesota were refused permission by the USSFA to join the ASL. Notwithstanding this setback, the ASL went into its 1967-68 season with a twelve-team, two division league. The only noticeable change from the early days was the admission of the Rochester and Washington clubs.
The ASL teams still operated on small budgets-New York Inter’s budget was about $50,000 a year-and still had ethnic followings, played in dusty ovals, and had part-time players who performed before small crowds. Edner Breton, later to play for Detroit Cougars in the other league, played a couple of exhibition games for Rochester’s ASL team in 1968. "It was like a bunch of kids playing in a park with no organization whatsoever", he recalled.
Ukrainian Nationals of Philadelphia took the 1967-68 ASL crown. Wth the demise of the NASL's Detroit Cougars, the ASL started looking seriously at expansion to the Midwest, and began making the first preliminary planning for such a move.
In an apparent concession to the "majors", the ASL announced that it would begin playing a summer season in 1969. As a result, for the first time since its inception, the American Soccer League did not begin a season in September of the year. The 1968-69 season was truncated to become simply the 1968 Fall season. scheduled for 12 games. Some clubs, not content to spend the summer and fall of 1968 idly, staged an "internal season": Washington Darts took the championship. In between the two sessions, five teams folded, while Lowell moved to Fall River.

Lowell Astros Clinch Crown
(NEW BEDFORD)-The Lowell Astros clinched the Northern Division title of the New England Soccer League yesterday by defeating the New Bedford Portuguese Sports 2-1 in a contest that was highlighted by thrilling and superbly executed soccer.
The Astros now have a seasonal record of 12 wins and three losses in league competition for a total of 24 points.
With the game 25 minutes old, Victor Silva of New Bedford took a pass from Antonio Conia and drilled it home for the first goal of the contest.
Then for the next 40 minutes the Astros tried desperately to tie the score but were repeatedly denied by the extraordinary goaltending of Jose Silva.
Finally Lowell's Fernando Souza rifled the ball past Silva for the first Lowell tally.
With only 10 minutes left in the game, Itamar Alves took a pass from Elcio Cancado and booted it to the wide-open Wagner Leao who converted Cancado's assist into the winning goal for Lowell.
Depending on a league decision to be announced later this week, the Astros will play either a league game next Sunday or a tilt against the Dighton Gold Stars, recent winners of the NESL's Southern Division crown.

Astros to Meet Dighton August 13,1967
The Lowell Astros will be shooting for their second playoff win and the New England Soccer League title when the famed soccer club meets the Dighton Gold Stars in the second game of a home-and-home series at the Fall River Stadium at 4 p.m. tomorrow.
The Astros won the opening game at Mount Hope Field, 2-1 last Sunday, at the home field of the Dighton club. However, the Lowell soccer team has been unable to secure the Cawley Memorial Stadium here in Lowell because of the prohibitive rental price and have selected the Fall River Stadium as the site of its home games.
If the Astros can win tomorrow it will mean the New England title for the locals. If the series goes into a final tilt the third game will be played August 20.
